The method
How these numbers are worked out
Start from a real menu, not an empty box
Each starting point is a working menu for that kind of party — a sit-down dinner, a BBQ, a buffet, a kids' party, brunch or a cocktail party — with the dietary tags already filled in. It is faster to delete two dishes and rename a third than to write six from nothing.
Tagging is the part that matters
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free, dairy-free and nuts, marked per dish and collected into a key at the bottom of the menu. Only the tags you actually use appear, so the key stays short and the menu stays readable.
It checks the menu before your guests do
No vegetarian main, no gluten-free option, nothing vegan on a long menu, nuts that need flagging, or a single main dish with no fallback — these get raised as you build rather than discovered on the night.
The page is the menu
What you edit is what prints. The buttons, tag pickers and unticked labels drop away, leaving a clean card with your title, your courses and your dietary key — ready to put on the table or send round in advance.
Common questions
How do I share a party menu with my guests?
Write it here, then print it or save it as a PDF and send it round with the invitation. Sharing the menu in advance is how you find out about allergies and dietary needs while there is still time to cook something about it, rather than at the table.
What dietary labels should I put on a menu?
Vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free cover almost every request you will get, and nuts should be flagged because it is the allergy people expect to see marked. Five short codes on the page and a key at the bottom is enough — a menu covered in symbols stops being readable.
Do I need a vegetarian main course?
Yes, if any guest is vegetarian, and a side dish does not count. This tool checks for it and says so, because serving someone a plate of sides while everyone else eats a main is the single most common menu mistake and the easiest one to avoid.
How many dishes should a party menu have?
For a sit-down dinner, one main with two sides is plenty. For a buffet or BBQ, offer two or three mains so people have a choice — and because a single dish leaves you no margin if something goes wrong in the kitchen.
Can I change the menu it starts me with?
Every part of it. The starting menus are a template, not an answer: rename any dish, add a description, change the dietary tags, delete what you're not cooking, rename the course headings, and add your own dishes to any section. You can also start from a blank menu.
Does this work out how much food to buy?
No — that's a separate job, and it's what the party food calculator does. Write the menu here, then take the dish list over there to get purchase weights for your guest count.
